One hurt as train rams car at level crossing

One person was injured when a train rammed a car at an unmanned level crossing at Kothanalloor, near here, on Saturday.

The incident occurred at around 10 a.m. on the Pallithazham-Chamakkala road when the car driven by Jaison Jacob, 37, hailing from Kothanalloor, was hit by Parasuram Express, headed for Mangalore from Thiruvananthapuram.

The police said Mr. Joseph tried to cross the railway track before the train arrived. However, the engine switched off and he failed to restart it despite repeated attempts.

The train rammed the rear of the vehicle, pushing it forward. The car came to a halt after hitting a post adjacent to the crossing.

Falls into ditch

The driver escaped falling into a ditch that was behind the post, the police said.

Passers-by rushed to the scene on hearing the noise. Mr. Joseph was taken to the Government Medical College, Kottayam, with injuries, the police said.
