Sensex starts 100 points higher; Reliance Industries hits fresh 52 week high


NEW DELHI: The BSE Sensex rose 0.4 per cent in opening trade on Monday, led by gains in RIL, ITCBSE 0.38 % and NTPC.

At 9:20 a.m., the 30-share BSE index pared some of its morning gains and was trading 0.3 per cent higher at 20,102. RILBSE 4.07 % (4 per cent), ITC (0.6 per cent) and NTPCBSE 0.55 % (1.01 per cent) led the gainers pack.

The Nifty was trading at 6,074.15, up 10 points or 0.17 per cent. It touched a high of 6094.35 and a low of 6069.40 in early trade today.

Reliance IndustriesBSE 4.07 % surged over 5 per cent higher to hit its fresh 52-week high of Rs 936.15, after the oil & gas major reported 24 per cent rise in quarterly net profit as the world's largest refinery at Jamnagar ran flat out and earned hefty margins, helping the conglomerate exceed street expectations and bounce back after four lacklustre quarters.

The oil & gas major registered its best percentage gain in at least 1 year. The stock was trading 4 per cent higher at Rs 935.80 at 09:20 am.

The BSE Midcap Index was up 0.30 per cent and the BSE Smallcap Index gained 0.22 per cent. BSE IT Index slipped 0.65 per cent and the BSE Consumer Durable Index dropped 0.4 per cent.

Among the sectoral indices, the BSE Oil & Gas Index rose 1.9 per cent, the BSE Power Index moved 0.4 per cent higher, the BSE Capital goods Index advanced 0.2 per cent and the BSE FMCG Index was up 0.3 per cent.

ONGCBSE -0.27 % (9.3 per cent), GAILBSE 1.24 %(2.6 per cent), Maruti SuzukiBSE 1.51 % (2.1 per cent), RIL (1.02 per cent) and Bajaj AutoBSE -0.63 %(1.3 per cent) were among the Sensex gainers.

Hero Moto (4 per cent), WiproBSE 0.09 % (4.02 per cent), M&M (1.9 per cent) and TCSBSE -0.82 % (1 per cent) were among the major Sensex losers.

Asian markets were trading mixed with a negative bias. Japan's Nikkei slipped over 1 per cent in early trade ahead of the outcome of the Bank of Japan policy meeting.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index was trading 0.9 per cent lower at 10,811.17 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was trading 0.04 per cent lower at 23,591.12.

South Korea's Kospi index was trading 0.6 per cent lower at 1,974.45. China's Shanghai index was trading 0.04 per cent higher at 2,318.12.
