THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government on Wednesday decided to proceed with the project to install a waste-to-energy plant at Chalai. The decision was taken in an all-party meeting convened by minister for urban affairsManjalamkuzhy Ali. In the meeting, the minister said that the plant will process the waste generated in Chalai and Manacaud.
Power point presentations regarding the project will be arranged for the local residents who have expressed reservations regarding the project. Ali said that the project will be replicated in three other places in the city. The company for implementing the projects will be finalized through a tender process.
However, Chalai councillor Usha Sateesh continued to express dissent in the meeting. She said that they were promised a mini-plant that could process the waste generated at Chalai. "The daily generation of waste at Chalai is five tonnes.As per the agreement, the corporation has to supply 35 tonnes every day. This does not make sense. Naturally, waste has to be brought in from other parts of the city. This can't be allowed ," said Usha Sateesh.
Minister for health V S Sivakumar who was also present at the meeting said that the project will be implemented only after winning over the confidence of all the residents in the area. Mayor K Chandrika, V Sivankutty MLA, action council members, councillors and local political leaders took part in the meeting. Another all party meeting for finalizing the spots for setting up other plants in the city will be held on January 31.
